Giz, there doesn't say anywhere that tryouts have to be a specific size.
And as far as I can see, this is full body.

Good luck c:

Giz, do you not know how to critique politely, or do you just like being horribly rude?

Goodluck on your other tryouts. I'm not accepted here, so I don't think I'm allowed to critique or anything. :c But good luck!

Anatomy:
Basic understanding of anatomy is shown. The stomach area is really thin. The back legs stick up too much (nub, I can't remember what that's called right now). Think a human foot. The toes are on the ground, and the back of the foot is the nub. The snout is turned too much. Remember, we can only see one eye, so we shouldn't be able to see the whole snout! The eye is placed a little too far back. The farthest back leg is also a bit wonky. Overall, you're getting there! I also like the design of your fursona.

Perspective:
The legs are all on one platform (sorry I don't know how to describe it). The farther legs should be spread apart more from the closer legs. This leads into the background:

Background:
Very bland and flat. No offense, of course. The roof is just a rectangle? There is no ledge for the dog to be standing on, so it makes it a bit confusing. The sky could have more gradients. It should go from dark to light (up to down). The clouds were very nice, but could have benefited from more darker shades. The other buildings just followed the flat pattern. Good job for actually drawing a background~

Shading:
1-2 shades on the canine. There should be more. Try shading with different colours (ex. Blue with red/purple). Very flat shading on the buildings. It doesn't really bring them forward. The canine lacks a shadow because of the roof.

But this was a good tryout anyhow. I'm not going to vote, cause I don't really know the standards here. Good luck!

Actually, the sky goes light to dark as you go up.

Zero @ Tuesday, December 16th 2008, 8:09 PM

...what did I say again?
But anyhow, I meant dark to light as in up to down ("top" of the sky to the "bottom" of the sky)

Yeah, you could do that, or you can do this:
When you click submit when you are done the image, don't type anything in the boxes, and just click "View" on the top of the page. That'll bring you back to WOI and your picture SHOULD be s.s.'d.
I do it all the time on WOA, so it should work here. Yo would just need to ask an admin to bump it up once you're done.

There are A LOT of colour bleeds. Try cleaning them up a bit n__n
I shading is very soft, and is placed well in most places (except the tail, that part it gets confusing). The character is simply adorable! However, I'm not sure if background counts, because it does not interact with the character very well. I also think you could make your lines a little smoother, especially in the arm area. You can do this by using the bezier tool (not mandatory if you can draw good lines) and tapering. Tapering is when you erase the ends of the lines to sharpen them to a point. It makes the lines look much neater.

This is adorable, good luck on your second tryout!

Alright. I love this, the lineart is really lovely<3 Now, let's get down to crits. I suck at them so bear with me. |D
I'll start with the anatomy. The way you made the dog sit looks awkward. I'm guessing this is a wolf, or a wolf-like dog. The back really doesn't arch much at all. Here's a picture of a dog sitting or compairson
http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/805/889858.JPG
You really didn't include any sort of jaw while shading this. When you draw a dog, making the jawbone more visible helps with the placement of the ears. Also, you made the neck very thick. When a dog lifts it's head to that angle, the neck look like it's bending.
http://clarkvision.com/galleries/images.wolves/web/wolf.c02.08.2004.img_6940b-600.jpg
Notice how the neck looks?
Alright. now to the facial features. You made the eye drooop quite a bit there. A dog's eyes don't normally look like that.
http://clarkvision.com/galleries/images.wolves/web/wolf.c02.08.2004.img_6940b-600.jpg
And uhmmm the muzzle is a bit off as well...
You made it curve up right on the tip.. kind of.
Here's a few pictures of dog's mouths and stuff C:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2092/2316931605_a8dcd86469.jpg?v=0
http://images.inmagine.com/img/photoalto/paa029/paa029000054.jpg
OK BACKGROUND TIEM XD
Uhh
The mountains look like they're in front of the water. Like floating or something. You can't just have random things in the background with lineart. It you have one thing in the bg with lineart, all of it should have lineart. Of course, you could have the things that are closer have lineart, and the farther it goes back, the less lineart there is.
Other than that, the water just looks messy, and there are a few color leaks.
Good luck<3

ShaoShao @ Friday, November 14th 2008, 12:26 PM
For the background I'd suggest trying to use a horizon line and consider less of the shape you might see from another angle (when you see a cliff from a particular angle, you don't get the curves of its edge, just the level of the ground). Hard to explain but there is never anything stopping you from using photo references or guidelines from a book to get a better grip on things.

Now, the lighting in this... if it's night time and the only light source is the moon you'd expect everything to be pretty dark, right? (in a city you'd have a yellow or orange glow about from all the lights, but in the country it's pitch black) I'd probably think of starting dark, then highlighting on all the sides that the moon's light could reach, then using even darker to show areas where nearly no light at all is getting to. It's good to see you're following the light source here, but the next step is thinking about what's blocking the light, where are shadows cast and what shapes are they? There are parts on the mountains that you've highlighted but I'd consider to be in the shadow of another peak that comes between it and the moon. The water too, should be shadowed a bit, and, most importantly, show some reflection of its surroundings. Try using a semi-transparent brush of the mountain's colour onto the water's colour, then picking up that colour and using it to draw out the mountain's shape in the water (I'm not entirely sure what perspective you're supposed to use there, but I don't think anyone'd kill you for some artistic license on that xD).

Also, good to see you've shaded white with blue. Overall, shading with another colour's tint gives a picture more atmosphere (for example, orange tint makes it warmer, blue makes it cooler) and here it would be extra awesome to try using blue tint. Just reduce the colour to something darker like normal, then put the blue up a little until you get a colour that works well. You could also raise the red a little to make it purpley. :3 If you want though, you could use a blue or purple with a semi-transparent brush over your base. The highlights would be untinted because the moon's light is white, but you could work a teeny bit of blue in to make it eerie (might overdo it on the blue though).

I think the last thing I should say is, when the perspective and colouring in a pic all works together, it can do a lot to make the pic feel complete, like a puzzle put together properly. For now it's probably best to figure out your anatomy and stuff, since living things are your main subject (it's a good excuse to go to the zoo too >.>), but whenever you have the chance, muck about with colours, light, perspective. They're daunting at first but once you get something from them, there's an immediate wow factor. This picture here has great potential for wow factor, and it's definitely intermediate material, but y'know, don't rest on that. Aim higher.

/motivational speech, I'm in such a weird mood today. Hope this made sense.

Oh, and, I don't think the eye's that bad. It's one thing where you can use style as an excuse (though, there's a range of styles that are more realistic without necessarily looking it and it doesn't hurt to adapt from reality into fiction). I'd focus on accommodating the eye though, like, it's a bit close to the ear and the the top of the head, so I'd stop the ear a bit further back and give it a little more skull. That way the size of the eye isn't too alarming in comparison with the rest and... it's less likely to be a health and safety hazard. :x

ok, I took the fin out, so I could show you the anatomy. It isn't perfect, because elongated bodies are hard for me XD Someone else probably would have done a better job~

I'm actually PROUD of this one! 8D

The clouds and the sky came out a little... messy, but I love the grass and the path. This was my first time using textures to shade and I think it came out kinda successful. Though I think I could have used a finer texture.

I'm seriously going all out on these tryouts. Just like the one before, this is my first time doing this pose, first time doing a background like this, and a first time trying out more detailed anatomy.

Now for downsides...

The sun came out undesirable and frankly Toboggan(the name of this character) doesn't really look like a fox, but just like a dog .3. . I'm not good at drawing differences between wolves, foxes, and dogs. Or any kind of canine D|

You should be proud.
This came out very nicely.

Sorry for the absence of comments.
WOA isn't very popular yet.

ANYWAYS; crits C:
I do like the pose you have, but te body seems like it goes kinda skinny in the back. Watch your view.
Next, the shading is very simple. I don't see much wrong with it besides the awkward tone-look. When using tones, you need to switch the tone to make it fade into the base color.
Your lines are nice, but they need to be tapered! Come onnnnn tapering is fun C:
Also, the background looks a little rushed.

Overall the picture is adorable.
I would say practice for 6 more weeks though.
I don't think your quite there yet, but with a little practice, you'll surely make it!

Old character I recently found again while cleaning out ancient folders.

Points for anyone who completes the lyrics. Without google.

I personally think this is amazing and you are extremely good at making fur seem really soft. Maybe a little more darkness in some areas so it doesn't blend in with the background and maybe around the eyes too so it doesn't look plastered on. Good job with the head/face!

ShaoShao @ Tuesday, November 4th 2008, 1:09 PM
Thanks. Yeah, I've got to work on doing the background on the same layer too to stop that from happening - stop having it as an afterthought.

Eyes are always a bit of a mystery to me in lineless - it doesn't matter what I try they still look like googly eyes. Next time I'll try highlighting til much further in so the indentation is closer to the ball.

I'm surprised you didn't get on me about the tail, shoulder, paws, neck, stray leg, and random dark patches where I didn't cover the base right. They're quite a mess. ^^;;

I was on WO beginner so I thought I'd try out for intermediate. I'm probably not good enough but... could it hurt? I know I'm a terrible artist soo... crit away! Doesn't hurt me!

This is the first time so I wanted to ask a few questions
1. how many trys do I get?
2. do I have to do all of them or if you can see my art is good enough you'll let me in?
3. What are requirements for my tryout pictures?
4. If someone got in Advanced would they automatically be able to draw on Intermediate?
5. Do you need to have requirements to crit on someone's tryout?

ok that's it. I know the color is leaking a little, but I thought that would be good water affect... Even though the water affects stink.

.__________. ok since no one seems to crit on it I'll crit my own picture -shot- Mostly only because i saw a lot of things wrong with it

Ok... well the shading is third rate and if there is no light (because I didn't put rays of light) why is his head and muzzle shiny? The head is unrealistically round and the hind legs would be to short to support him. Also the claw is only on the inside of the paw, not the outside (I only found this out after i drew the pic >____> ). The web in his fingers wouldn't help him swim at all, I can barely see them. The clam looks stupid because I have no idea how to draw them and I didn't use a reference. The tail doesn't look like it's going into the background, it just looks plain small. He's under water, his whiskers should be sorta floating to the top as he slowed down. The anatomy looks cartoonish and undetailed (which is really just how I draw but still...). The eye doesn't really have shape and the one on the right looks slanted.

The only thing I like in this picture is the bubbles and the fin -runs off to make tryout #2-

GAH;
thats awesome C:
The intermediate oekaki is not very active yet :/
Your always welcome to the beginner or advanced anytime C:

CRITSSSS:
The shadin' looks pretty accurate, but it looks like it was rushed or done sloppy. Make sure your shading is crisp (unless style varies) because shadin' makes a pic. Your lineart looks really nice w/ the tapering and stuff, but when u get too close to a line with those water colors (that you used for shading) it blurs the pic and makes it look messy. I really like your background. It's simple & dosent take away from the pic.

I look forward to seeing your next tryout.

This has been bugging me for a while now. The shading is VERY off considering where you've put the sun. The sun is your light source, and while its light would bounce off other things and onto the subject, generally that light is only on one side of the subject and leaves the rest in shadow.

I suggest considering that before drawing a sun in next time - a sky scene doesn't necessarily need it to be complete and you avoid a lot of trouble by just saying 'the light source is higher up'. Also, having it in yellow can cause some confusion between realistic and more stylised/cartoony themes - realistically a yellow sun would give out yellow light.

I'd say that's more on advanced level though, a lot of people don't experiment so much with shading until quite far on in their development. It's worth thinking about anyway, the longer you know of something the more time you have to try incorporating it gradually.
