i think this is great! my only concern is to put alittle more effort into ur background. but i say IN!

The background is a little lacking, but still, in.

I agree that the background could have used some work, however, your anatomy and cel-shading is pretty awesome <3 so I vote IN as well

Okay let me first just say this?I LOVE THAT TAIL!
Alright now that that has been stated?.

~CRITS~
I really like your use of tonal values. You show a consistent use of lights and darks throughout both your pieces and that makes me very happy~ The shading in some areas does seem rather forced and flat to me though? But I?m not very good with cell-shading myself so I don?t feel that I would be able to give much advice on in. But moving on~ I feel the proportions and anatomy are rather decent. The head fits the body quite nicely and the torso and legs aren?t too short or too long. However, the hand seems rather off to me?I can?t really place what it is but something just doesn?t seem accurate. It might be because it?s cut off. But all in all the anatomy is good! Like others have already stated, I think you could have spent a bit more time on the background. The grass has some nice texture and tonal values but the size of the grass blades aren?t very consistent and the ground appears to just end. It doesn?t seem like the ground is going back but rather straight up which you know isn?t possible but to the eye looks that way. The jagged texture for the grass should get smaller and smaller as it goes back but you drew the grass that would be furthest away as larger which makes the perspective awkward. But I am glad to see you integrated the subject with the ground by having the grass raised around his feet and tail. I also enjoy the atmosphere of the sky. The clouds have some nice and deep grays in them along with some lighter tones. This really allows the clouds to POP! But I?m not too sure if the use of watercolors for the sky was the best choice. Also the stars seem rather rushed. But overall I can see that you put quite an amount of effort into both tryouts and I find both quite pleasing to look at~

So I vote IN~!

=]

Sorry if any of this didn't make sense >< My brain is kind of dead at the moment =3=

Uhh well I don't have a lot of time so I'll cover what I can, and leave the rest to someone else.

My biggest problem is that I can't really...tell if this is feral or anthro, so that makes it kind of hard to critique the anatomy...but I CAN tell you that those are some really big paws. The face is off too, but I can redline that in a minute. UM I'd say more, but if this /is/ anthro then I'll leave that for someone else to handle, as I'm more of a feral artist myself.
Well my next issue is the background. Please don't reply saying "I got lazy," that's a terrible excuse. There's a lot of inconsistency here. The style of shading used on the character clashes too much with the styles of shading used on the sky and sun.
Obviously, SOMEONE has to say that it's impossible to sit on a cloud, but I'd rather not...you know...WHATEVER
Now most people will tell you that it's best to change the color of your lineart, and in many cases, such as this one, it's true. HOWEVER, you can take this up a notch by sort of shading your lineart, catch my drift? As in, places where more of the light hits is lighter, etc....YOU KNOW??

Uhh that's it, I'll go ahead and get to the redline.

Edit: http://i50.tinypic.com/1zg96oz.png Apparently I do better with redlines lol
Well it's not perfect...but I hope it helps...
And let me know if my handwriting is too hard to read and I'll translate lol

i like your style and use of textures, you paid very nice attention to the color and the shading is very well done

the only crits i have are the antomy, the head dosn't seem to connect with the lower half of the body, the paws are to big and much to long for the rest of the body, and i will leave the rest of the crits to someone else

Yeah come join us here >w<

Whoa and you have a pretty sweet shading style! I envy people who can do solids.

ANYWAYS

I really love the colors and various tones you used! They really accent the highlights and shadows. It?s also clear where your light source is coming from; however, I find some of the highlights to be a bit awkward. For example on the left paw in the front, the shading seems rather forced and unnatural. I think if you didn?t make the gradients following the same shape and form as each tone then it would blend a bit better; and same with the right leg. But the shading on the rest of the body is lovely! I really enjoy the fur textures you used and the fact that you aren?t following the contour lines for shading but rather the form of the body and fur. I also enjoy the tones you used for the sky. They work well with separating the subject matter from the background but at the same time bled them both together to make one piece. I think the black outline around the sun and clouds is a bit too distinct but luckily it doesn?t take away too much from the image. The anatomy also seems fairly decent; however, some parts are rather stiff. I feel like the tail should have a more flowing feeling to it. It seems too straight to me. But overall this is a good tryout!

Well, good luck on your second! I?m really looking forward to seeing it >w<

Redline~> http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn219/soulwithin465/290copy.jpg

*note* I?m guessing this is a k-9 if not then sorry! But if it is then the paws should be smaller. Dogs tend to have smaller paws, its cats that have the bigger ones. Also since he (or she) is lying down the stomach shouldn?t arch in the manner that it does. Rather it should be resting on the cloud to give it a more natural look. Well, hope this all helps! Don?t rely too much on redlines though, actually photos and real life observation are the best ;]

idk if anyone has covered what I'm saying now, but anyhow...:

First of all, I'd like to say that I love the clean lineart! And the design and concept of this are extremely cool <333
As for the shading, you should be very careful with how you shade. I cannot find the lightsource when I forget about the sun and focus on how you shaded this.
Basically, everything beneath the canid should be shaded (draw a horizontal line just above the canid's paws. The area beneath the line should be for the most part shaded, with no highlights showing on it) because of the angle you put the sun in.

I'll do a redline of the shading, just wait a moment.

And while shading, notice the colour of the sun. That colour is the colour of the light that is emerging from it. The colours you used to shade the clouds reflect exactly that. However, you used completely different hues for shading the canid. On the canid, the colours seem almost flat and grey because you didn't use the sun's colour as a starting point.

EDIT: http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa299/issi007/redlinemajesticcardboardbox.png
Didn't concentrate much on the anatomy, but more on the shading. And I just used a very strong blue to simply show shading, not because that is the colour you would shade with.

REMEMBER: warm (as in colour) lightsources give warm hightlights and cold shadows. Cold lightsources give cold highlights and warm shadows. Whilst shading, you shade with the complimentary colour of the original colour. For example, if the lightsource gives off red light (bloodred light, not orange in any way), then you shade with green. But because the lightsource isn't very extreme, the green hue isn't so visible, and so the red and green blend together and create a brown-ish colour.
Bear this in mind, because this could easily lift your shading even more up, creating a more environmental and consistent feel.

I hope you'll make sense of what I said just now, and hope it helps c:

BUT ANYHOW
I love the concept of this, and I really love how you combined tones into this. Such a lovely effect~

Good luck c:
