I really love the characterized style and the postures, it's very expressive, and especcially combined with the monochrome, can be really strong.
My main issue is the anatomy structure though, which can be fixed by finding refferences and being really careful with proportions.
Also, the way you are shading is that you're using the pen tool to cell shade, which can be nice, but you need more gradients than just 3 or 4. I like your highlights and light source, but i want more shadows, there's a lovely dark green in your background gradient which I would've liked to see work in the shadows of the character, which would pull the character more into the background.
... and last thing, backgrounds, refferences for backgrounds, and TIME is your friend. The background looks very rushed, and with the pen tool, it's hard to cover up.(I use watercolor, smoother and easier to 'cheat' and be lazy >> <<).
Summing it up, anatomy, dymanic shadows, backgrounds, and spend time making it perfect. 60min is a short time for a tryout, especcially working with hard brush tools like the pen.
I say Borderline/In, so, let's wait and see what other people say, Good luck!

Well, Anne pretty much got everything, but the thing that gets me is the backgrounds on both your tryouts, they fit really well, but are really simple aswell, and there's not much to focus on.

I downloaded HeartGold onto my r4, but some of it's in Japanese still D: I can still play it though, and it's amazing! I'm going to buy the game when it comes out though so I have a good version :>

The shading on this is lovely!

Yeah underwater is hard to do...but this turned out so awesomeeeee >A<

i screwed up the antomy big time by not paying attention to what i was doing, im not sure what it is, but iu can have it if u want
he is supposesd to have kangaroo legs

on a brighter note, i'm having a wonderfule week, i have no school tomorrow due to snow, i got a ps3, and an awsome game for it, i pre- ordered the new pokemon game soul sivler, and i got a four day weekend up ahead

Right, I was drawing something awesome yesterday, and as I went to send it in, my internet cut out, so I asked my mum ro reset it. She didn't. She told me to apologize because her partner called /me/ ugly

So I didn't save the picture.
And now they're not feeding me, I went to make a sandwich and they took the stuff off of me, so I didn't eat anything yesterday. I'm still hungry now, and probably won't get to eat for a while.

I say out, but you're really close.

Your shading technique is quite nice and smooth, but there needs to be more in order to define a lightsource. On the yellow dress, on the middle I can only see a light highlight, and no shadows following the fold lines on the front.
So next time, dynamic shading, and perhaps a reff for a more dynamic pose? Symmetry may be appealing, but creating symmetry in movement is art.
Nice use of the tones, and the texture of the hair, and the dress design is very cool.

Please come back and tryout again when you feel you're ready ^^

What Anne said- you have to work on your shading a bit-- don't be afraid of strong lighting! And yes, a more dynamic pose would be nice; she looks awfully... stiff.
But I do think you have what it takes, with some practice you should be able to get in! :]

Haha, I'm not exactly in the mood to critique, but I'll take a shot at it~
I would've liked to see something more on the outside of the cave- it's just grass and sky, y'know? To me, it just makes the perspective feel... off... I can't explain myself at the moment so hopefully someone else will be able to later xD The lighting is a bit funky, too, like I'm seeing the way the shadows are being cast and... it just feels like the sun would have to be in our sight for it to work.. but, uh, idk. The cave is nice, but it still seems like you were lazy doing it

The anatomy of the leopard looks off, but I don't have the time to talk about it ...er... sorry xD
But this is overall a great tryout, I love the composition, and I say.. in!

In, love the composition of this, and the lighting really gives depth to the picture.
Yes, the blue sky and grass may be abit overdone, BUT, I think it puts an interesting perspective on it xP

Oh my, this is a great improvement! I really feel you took the critiques given to you before to heart <3
The shading is much more dramatic and gives the image itself more character and depth. Also I enjoy the various details you?ve added to the cave. Rather than just leaving it as a plain old cave you added plants and rocks here and there which gives the eye more to look at. However, I do notice a few missteps. While the shading is nice overall it seems kind of blotchy in some places, specifically around the cave walls. Also the highlight shouldn?t be quite so thick. And to add to what Kyuubi had mentioned, I do feel you could have done something a bit more interesting with outside of the cave. Why?s the subject looking outside? What kind of environment does s/he live in? What feelings does the subject have? What?s the story behind this? Thinking about these things and then applying the answer to them visually can really increase the interest of a piece. While blue sky and green grass with the occasional cloud is accepted it?s quite clich?. Why not set up scenery that involves a change in seasons like fall or winter? Or draw a point of interest that the subject is focused on like an old rotting tree or a flock of birds. You can also depict the subject?s emotions through the colors you use. Add some shades of blues and violets here and there to express a calm and tranquil feeling. Or change the weather to a chaotic thunderstorm. These are all just suggestions! Overall this is a decent tryout and a wonderful improvement! And you should be proud of this! All in all I vote IN~
