just doodlin'. if anyone wants to colour...how do I public-ify this? anyways I'm super peeved cuz, I've had 7english teacher in 3weeks (no joke), my geo teacher doesn't know the pacific from the atlantic (literally), and our new principle is a former stripper and current idiot

this is an old-fashioned oekaki without the 'public' thingy.. :(
but if someone wanted to color it, they could save the picture and the upload it :)

okay sorry didn't mean to make that sound rude. Yeah, it didn't used to be like this it's all the principle's fault, we used to be the number one school in the EQAO examinations for both 9th and 10th grades, we had trust and repect with the staff and now it is a for lack of a better, hell hole

Haha omg yeah like we have a new vice principle at our school now and he runs pretty much everything! And now the school is packed with more rules and regulations than I can keep up with! =A=

Ummm, I guess another way to let someone color is to log into your account..? But that's risky... and requires oodles of trust.

It?s not perfect but I tried >A<
Overall I feel the layout is balanced quite nicely; however, the direction she?s facing seems a bit awkward. I?m guessing she?s looking at the moon? The moon is in the background not the foreground so if she is looking at the moon her face should be looking away from us. You should be able to see more of her back rather than just the side and you might want to raise her butt up a bit to make it appear like she?s sitting on the branch rather than pasted on it. The legs are nicely done though and I enjoy the landscape! Hope to see this finished some time! And hope this helps a bit >u<

^^ So just remember to integrate refferences into your pictures, if anything, they're great practice.

Watching your animation for this one though, freehanding the proportions is fun and I do it alot when I'm lazy, but you'll occasionally end up with something not quite right. Remember to work out the proportions first, then add things over the body.

According to the crits i recieved on my tryouts I see that my two main problem areas at this point are shading and the ability to use a ref proporly so i tried to attack both issues in one picture

ref:
http://imagecache.asos.com/inv/T/28/303/561078/KingfisherTurquiose/image1xl.jpg

crits? (minus the fact i totally changed the colour and made her hair longer)

Anne Dyari @ Saturday, February 13th 2010, 12:29 AM
avatar
http://i50.tinypic.com/2d7ede9.jpg

The thing to mostly pay attention to is proportions, what angle are the shoulders at to make them look that way.
Another is soft shadows, in the photo, you can slightly 'see' her form against the dress using the shadows, which will give the picture more depth.

The more you draw from refferences, the more you'll learn.

UNKNOWN_ARTIST @ Saturday, February 13th 2010, 9:05 AM
avatar
thanks so much, yea, the shadow thing makes alot of sense and i feel a little silly for not doing that. I see that i should havehad less space between the head and should, does that make any sense? Your folds stand out alot more then mine, i think I should have made them look, deeper? <--- i don't know what word to use for that. Oh wow- my eye should have been alot smaller

More {monochromatic red} (i do enjoy monochromatic a bit too much)

Star @ Thursday, February 11th 2010, 8:40 PM

im not sure really.
but anywho. im horrible at critting.
so heres a try.
i cant really see the shading on the girl.
i see that you used quite a bit of colors there. but
its just not that noticeable
her legs seem too chubby.
the wings could use better shading. like add feathers or something.
the perspective is really off.
the head is waay too small

redline: http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/9851/fdgsfg.jpg

i really do not get the standards of this oekaki. so im not voting

(Edited on February 11, 2010, 8:42 pm)

UNKNOWN_ARTIST @ Thursday, February 11th 2010, 9:58 PM
avatar
I agree that the standards here are quite confuzing and at times it seems as though 'personality' has a factor on your accemptance?i see what you mean in the legs, boobs and wings though I'm not so sure that the head sound be larger, perhaps the eyes should just be higher?

Anne Dyari @ Thursday, February 11th 2010, 10:04 PM
avatar
More like the face should be slightly longer, like the chin.
Again, refferences will be your best friend, the soon you start using them, the better you'll get.

Other than that, I am not sure about the standards, but I think this is about intermediate. I thoroughly enjoy the concepts of the pictures, and the interesting style. In. ^^

quick redline- http://i45.tinypic.com/fwufkg.png

I really love the characterized style and the postures, it's very expressive, and especcially combined with the monochrome, can be really strong.
My main issue is the anatomy structure though, which can be fixed by finding refferences and being really careful with proportions.
Also, the way you are shading is that you're using the pen tool to cell shade, which can be nice, but you need more gradients than just 3 or 4. I like your highlights and light source, but i want more shadows, there's a lovely dark green in your background gradient which I would've liked to see work in the shadows of the character, which would pull the character more into the background.
... and last thing, backgrounds, refferences for backgrounds, and TIME is your friend. The background looks very rushed, and with the pen tool, it's hard to cover up.(I use watercolor, smoother and easier to 'cheat' and be lazy >> <<).
Summing it up, anatomy, dymanic shadows, backgrounds, and spend time making it perfect. 60min is a short time for a tryout, especcially working with hard brush tools like the pen.
I say Borderline/In, so, let's wait and see what other people say, Good luck!

Gecko @ Thursday, February 11th 2010, 1:08 PM
avatar
Well, Anne pretty much got everything, but the thing that gets me is the backgrounds on both your tryouts, they fit really well, but are really simple aswell, and there's not much to focus on.
Ehh, I don't know, third?

UNKNOWN_ARTIST @ Thursday, February 11th 2010, 3:47 PM
avatar
I see what you mean about the anatomy(BTW the "ear" shapes are meant to be large like that, not slimmed like in ur sketch but no bigg) and adding more shades to my well -shading
