GUUUUUUUUUYS SORRRRRRYYYYY!! my comp died mid-january so i was SCREWED as far as digital art goes (of course i DO happen to have a class on the computers but then you get my suckie mouse art XD) But i promise(i miss my automatic spell-check :C) to come be moe accctttiiiivvvveee

Contest prize for a friend on deviantArt

Eeheee this bro was fun to draw :3 Quite a challenge taking the style he was originally drawn it, which was kind of a minimalist kind of style.

But I had a lot of fun and I haven't done anything on oekaki for a while it felt good doing it once again :3

Anyway I hope you enjoy it, and I would love some critiques because I tried some new things in the picture like candle light shading and using more than one light source :3

Yeah the other source would be the sun, coming from the left :0 And it's sort of both, the house is in a tree but it's a tree in a forest. So like behind the house there's foliage but in front there's like a clearing.

okay, well, at first I was gonna do a shading redline, but sai won't open up for me atm, so I hope some good ol' fashion word critique will do

For the shading: the candle wouldn't really do anything in broad daylight, actually - especially for a flame without any white (meaning it's weak). Here's a picture of someone holding a lighter when it's not dark: http://www.zurmat.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/USB_flash_drive_light.jpg
Notice how even when the flame is that close to the hand, there is no illumination, just because the stronger light source around it basically overpowers it. I would also pronounce the other shadows in the picture more, since they're just teetering around the lines. The shadow that really SHOULD be more is the one under his helmet thing, 'cause that's directly blocking the sun. You could add some fur texture, too; it doesn't need to be heavy, but just where the shading starts, to make it feel a little more tangible.
I would also suggest experimenting with shading color a little, because the colors you use atm are either just darker, blacker versions of the base color, or something close. I think a bright brownish-tan/lively forest green mix would have made a nice color scheme (color scheme can be very important to a picture).

As for anatomy: the legs are a little confusing. His eyes also seem too far apart, but I don't know what his original design looks like, so I can't really redline anything. The way you drew him, he isn't really interacting with the plane of the background at all, so it looks like he's literally on the edge of that wooden panel and is about to fall off. I don't think a digitigrade animal really could sit that way on a ledge.
His hands are off, too; it seems more like they're linking together, rather than holding a candle. The neck and the head shape kind of don't work well, either; the neck is barely there, but the head is very pronounced; usually you can only work with that kind of head shape with more neck.

I guess I should also suggest (as I do with anyone that the advice could apply to) that you could experiment with composition in the future. A square canvas can be just right for some things, but for other things, rectangular canvases make it more interesting to look at. Just a couple compositions I can think of for this one are a perspective from the back of the dark treehouse room, so you see him staring at the sky and all of the bright colors of daytime are pronounced against the darkness of the room; or a tall canvas where you can see the entire treehouse, and the trees of the forest peaking over, to give the setting a real sense of depth.

Anyway, I hope that wasn't more than what you were hoping for; I have this proclivity to give out very long-winded (and I suppose some of the younger ones also find it a little too harsh for their palate, because I usually don't throw in compliments to water it down) critique, but I hope it's worth something to you.
